Kuro sumi warriors were an elite force in ancient Japan. From early childhood they were taught to fight with the heart of a dragon. Considered to be supernatural, they were highly respected and honored in the Japanese culture. The chosen few were distinguished by their bold markings on their jawline and abdominal area.

One of the ways that their legend lives on is through the Kuro Sumi Inks. They were originally formulated in Japan, using only organic elements which make it very vegan friendly. Now made in the USA, they still use the same elements and strive every day to make safe, long-lasting inks that hold their colors for years.

Grey wash tattoos have been popular for many years in the ink world. It takes a lot of talent to do gray washing and artists want an ink they can depend on. Kuro Sumi gets that Job done, and stands strong in the ink world, just as the Kuro Sumi warriors did.

In all the reviews by artists, I was only able to find one negative review, which was a by customer who received a product which was cutting close to the expiration, although it was stated in that same review that they still loved the ink. I, myself have a gray wash tattoo done in Kuro Sumi which I have had for two years and it still looks bright with clear detail.

Nice review of Kuro Sumi ink. I’m glad you posted that this ink is vegan-friendly. Ever since you mention vegan inks I’ve been on the lookout for it.

You also stated that they have an expiration date. Do other inks not normally come with that?

  4. Hi David, i came across your post whilst looking for information on hand tatooing leather.
Do you think these inks will be suitable for this purpose, they do sound like they are fairly light proof?
I have tried pyrography and acrylics but they don’t give a depth of image as you can get with tatooing.

    1. Hello Phil. Thank you for taking the time to read my article. Yes these inks would work great for that and they lay easy without a lot of packing it in. I do thank you for visiting my website and do hope my answer helped.

  6. Really fascinating article. I personally love grey wash tattoos. They appeal to me so much more. This sounds like a really quality ink. Is this what most artists would generally use or is it a case of researching and finding one that does. The vegan side of things doesn’t bother me but the ink being of really good quality does.

    1. Hello David. Thank you for taking the time to read my article. Yes grey wash is awesome that’s what I have and they hold their color and have more detail. A lot of artists use this but also they do have their personal choices and there are a lot of great inks on the market.Thank you again for visiting my website and do hope you will return for future articles.

  7. Hi David!

I always loved Japan and everything they make so it’s nice to hear that this shading ink is keeping its elements in the manufacturing. To hear that those elements also are all organic is a bonus.

    Great name by the way!

Do you know if these are sold outside the USA?

    Regards, Jan

    1. Hello Jan. Thank you for taking the time to read my article. Yes kuro sumi is sold outside of the USA. They have kept the tradition of only using organic elements today and stand by it. Thank you again for visiting my website and do hope you will return for future articles.
